Lawmaker to address club

Jared Hembree

State Rep. Jared Hembree will address the Rotary Club on Jan. 2 about what to expect during the 2025 session after the state Legislature convenes Jan. 21 in Santa Fe.


Hembree serves on the House Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee; the House Judiciary Committee; and the House Rules and Order of Business Committee.


He is a partner in the Hinkle Law Firm of Roswell.

Rotarians lay veterans wreaths

Group that laid Wreaths during Dec. 14 ceremony

Roswell Rotary Club members, spouses, and friends laid wreaths on the graves of military veterans on Dec. 14 during the nationwide Wreaths Across America ceremony.


Maurice Geldert headed the ceremony for the club.


The wreaths were laid after an American Legion color guard opened the wreath ceremony at 10 a.m. at the General Douglas L. McBride Roswell Veterans Cemetery.

Two elected to club board

J.P. Cheney and Oscar Armendariz were elected to the Roswell Rotary Club Board of Directors at the annual business meeting on Dec. 12.


J.P. joins the board immediately, and Oscar will join on July 1.

Exchange students visit

Students and hosts meet for potluck dinner

Rotary District 5520 Youth Exchange students gather at the home of Roswell Rotarian Karl Shelton and his wife Toni for a potluck dinner on Dec. 6.


Joining the students are Roswell Rotary host families and members of the District 5520 Youth Exchange Committee from around New Mexico.


The high school students included visitors from Europe, Japan, and South America and outgoing students from New Mexico.


Bianca and J.P. Cheney headed up the visit to Roswell.


The students arrived on Dec. 5 and were met by their hosts.


On Dec. 6, they toured Carlsbad Caverns and the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell.


They visited various attractions around Roswell and performed a service project at the Roswell Homeless Center on Dec. 7 before departing on Dec. 8.


Warren and Barbara Yehl, Carolyn Mitchell, Jack and Renee Swickard, Steve and Kathy Smith, and Karl and Toni Shelton hosted the Youth Exchange students in Roswell.

Wreaths ceremony on Dec. 14

Rotarian Maurice Geldert asked members to again assist with the Roswell Rotary Club’s annual Wreaths Across America on Saturday, Dec. 14.


After wreaths are laid at the graves of military veterans, a short ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. to coincide with Wreaths Across America ceremonies across the nation.


Rotarians have been asked to meet at 8 a.m. at the General Douglas L. McBride Roswell Veterans Cemetery at East Poe Street and SE Main Street, adjacent to South Park Cemetery.

Business meeting next week

The Roswell Rotary Club will conduct its annual business meeting on Dec. 12.


Club officers and directors will describe their duties and accomplishments, and elections will be held at the meeting.


On Dec. 19, the club will host its Christmas lunch at the regular meeting time. The Pecos Valley Brass Quintet will play from 11:30 a.m. until noon.


A highlight of the party will be a white elephant gift exchange.


The club will not meet on Dec. 26, the day after Christmas.
